Performance 1: Tehching Hsieh

Tehching Hsieh's One Year Performance: 1978-1979 is currently on view at MoMA:

He locked himself in this cell in his Hudson Street apartment for one full year. A friend brought him food and took a photo of him on a daily basis. He was not allowed to communicate with anyone while he was there, including his visiting friend.

The photos and cell are on display.

I like Scarlett Johansson and thinks she's pretty banging but WHAT THE FUCK is this tattoo?

It's okay, Scarlett. I still think you're hot. But, really?!

Girl Crush: Emily Haines

Emily Haines is the leading lady of Toronto-based bands Broken Social Scene and Metric, and she recently put out a solo album called Emily Haines and the Soft Skeleton, but this is not about the music. It's about the clothes.

I have a majorly obsessive crush on that outfit. It's perfect. I want it and I want to rock it, but I'd probably wear heels instead of those wedges because I take cabs everywhere that's not work and don't perform (except for nights alone in my bedroom or when I play Guitar Hero at weird hours like waking up at 8am on a Saturday morning, but that's a different story altogether...).

Sorry to all the boys that read my blog, but I'm so goddamn PMS it actually HURTS.

The margin of my notebook is covered in doodles of unhealthy food:

And I cried when I found out all the people on what I'll call the Hudson River Plane survived. I cried tears of joy! And of uterine lining! That was really gross, I'm sorry.

Forget about going to the movies to see Notorious , because apart from the fact that this movie is probably going to suck something called cock and balls, I'm way too menstrual to even think about Biggie. I always get misty-eyed listening to him when it's THAT time of the month.

And if you don't know, now you know.

I'm From Virginia, Where Ain't Shit to do But Cook.

When The Clipse dropped Lord Willin' is 2002, I couldn't not listen to it. The beat for Grindin' is so simple, so sharp, so hard, and so fucking good to mix with. It's that song that makes everyone go crazy when it's dropped, be it at the club, at a house party, or in my bedroom when I'm messing around with my turntables (something I need to start doing more). I mean, with The Neptunes covering all of Clipse's production, they come correct with a huge advantage. But apart from The Neptunes involvement, Pusha T and Malice are two of the most talented rappers to put out records in a very long time.

Hell Hath No Fury came out in 2006 and much like Lord Willin', the cd did not leave the player (I'm all kinds of old school, records and cds, I know I know). It's such a complete hip hop album, and probably the best shit I've heard in a long time. I like Clipse better than anything Mr. Kanyeezy has dropped. It's not WHAT they're rapping about, it's how they do it. Lyrically, there aren't too many rappers out there that can even compare. They are grimey, they are raw, and they could never be a thug, they don't dress this well.

They are slated to drop a new album sometime this year called Till The Casket Drops. Neptunes aren't exclusive on production this time around, and they have enlisted the likes of Rick Rubin, P Dids, and some others. I'm anticipating some good shit, even though I'm slightly disappointed that they're not All Neptunes All The Time.

Anyway, the shirt says it all. Pusha T and Malice for President.

'Cuz she's the cheese and I'm the macaroni!

If you know me, you know that I love to cook. And if you don't know me, now you know. Tonight I will be making a special dish:

It could be a disaster, but it could also (and probably will) be the most delicious combination of food ever known to man.

I think about food 90% of the day. The other 10% I think about work. Right...

The croquettes did not work out. But I did make a sick mac and cheese. Guess I shouldn't try out for Top Chef anytime soon.

You're My Playground Love.

Opening reception for The Playground is on January 17th, 6-9pm at The Puffin Room (435 Broome Street).

Rock the Casbah

Above is the trailer for The Battle of Algiers. It was banned in France in 1965 and torture scenes were cut from the UK and US versions. The Pentagon screened the film in 2003, drawing comparisons with American involvement in Iraq. A flyer for the screening read, "How to win a battle against terrorism and lose the war of ideas. Children shoot soldiers at point-blank range. Women plant bombs in cafes. Soon the entire Arab population builds to a mad fervor. Sound familiar? The French have a plan. It succeeds tactically, but fails strategically. To understand why, come to a rare showing of this film."

"Give us your bombers, and you can have our baskets."

If you like this film, I highly suggest reading Frantz Fanon's The Wretched of the Earth.

Olafur Eliasson Haters Can Keep Hating.

A lot of people were not very fond of Eliasson's Waterfalls. They were slightly underwhelming, but after his incredible exhibit, Take Your Time, at MoMA last year, a bloodclot I gave NOT.

Olafur Eliasson has created this incredible book called Your House, commissioned by MoMA. I need to find out more on this, and see if/when the museum plans on showing it.

I'm resolute.

I know I lied and said I wasn't going to have a New Year's Resolution but I have two good ones:

1. Take more vacations.

2. Get fatter and be okay with it.

2009 is my year of being realistic. I'm also going to try to take more photos when I'm out. And maybe I'll employ my lomography camera more! This year holds big things for me.

Ambitious, I know!

Happy New Year!

The new year's party I went to was shut down by the po po about 20 minutes before midnight, which was MAYBE five minutes after we finally made our way up the stairs of a shady warehouse and paid cover. There was no champagne and there is no photographic evidence of my new year's eve getup (punk meets horseback rider), but the night was still fun and ended with a slice of broccoli pizza.

Hopefully 2009 involves more vacations, I think I'll make that my resolution. Always aiming high.

Happy New Year!
